Beyond the ShoreEmpowering Young Learners with Lifesaving Skills

At John Dory’s, the ocean is part of who we are. It’s where our story begins - but our responsibility goes beyond the shore.

Beyond the Shore, our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative in partnership with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), provides swimming lessons and water safety education to young learners in under-resourced communities across South Africa.

The Need Is Real

Every year, hundreds of South African children lose their lives to drowning - many of them in communities where access to swimming lessons and basic water safety education is limited or non-existent. For children who live near rivers, dams, or the coast, simply playing outside can carry real danger.

Beyond the Shore was created to change this. By teaching children to swim and educating them about water safety, we’re not only building skills - but we’re also saving lives.

In Partnership with the NSRI

We’re proud to be working alongside the NSRI’s Drowning Prevention Unit, whose expertise and passion drive the success of this initiative. Together, we identify schools and community centres where the need is greatest, and provide:

  • Professional swimming instruction for young learners
  • Water safety training, including how to spot danger and respond in emergencies
  • Transport to and from lessons, where needed
  • Swimming gear and equipment to ensure children feel safe and confident in the water

Lessons are taught by qualified instructors at safe, supervised facilities, and designed to be both fun and empowering.
