Our Eco Voyage

In partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium, John Dory’s is committed to looking after life below water. Since 2023, we have adopted 25 sea turtle hatchlings in the care of the Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Conservation Centre to ensure they get the best rehabilitative care possible before being release back into our oceans.

In the wild, only one or two out of every 1000 sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood – these numbers are under threat due to increased pollution, climate change and other hazardous human activities.

In 2022, John Dory’s and their Zero Waste initiative funded the rehabilitation and medical needs of Kijani, a Green Turtle rescued near Paternoster on the West Coast of South Africa. She was found in poor condition, and was very thin, with over 50% algal coverage. She was safely transported to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, where she received treatment for pneumonia amongst other things. After several months of rehabilitation, she regained her strength and was released back into the ocean in December 2022.

Every March to July is known as stranding season for sea turtles, and the Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Conservation Centre team work tirelessly to save these hatchlings. In 2023, John Dory’s Zero Waste and 10 John Dory’s restaurants each adopted a loggerhead hatchling, eleven in total. In December 2023, eight of these hatchlings were successfully released back into the ocean after receiving rehabilitative care by the Turtle Conservation Centre, with the other three hatchlings needing a little more time.

In 2024, turbulent weather conditions experienced along our coastline, saw a record high of 580 stranded hatchlings being cared for at the Turtle Conservation Centre. John Dory’s proceced to adopt 14 new hatchlings and the adoption fee for these hatchlings ensured that they received adequate nutritional support, rehabilitation and veterinary treatment for injuries or illnesses.

In partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium, we are committed to looking after life below water.
